Double Fatal Traffic Accident

On May 28, 2005, at approx 2:10 pm, The Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office received a call of a one vehicle roll-over in the 3000 blk of 36th Ln in Eastern Pueblo County.
A preliminary investigation of the crash indicates a 1995 White Pontiac Grand Prix was northbound on 36th Ln. The Pontiac lost control and ran off the right side of 40th Ln shearing off a telephone pole and rolling once landing on its wheels. A 4-year-old male was ejected from the car and airlifted by Flight For Life to St. Mary Corwin Hospital with head injuries and a broken right arm. Two girls, ages 1 ½ and 5 years were taken by ambulance to SMC for cuts, bruises and abrasions. The 51-year-old female driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Also pronounced dead at the scene was her 6-year-old grandson.
The only child that was in a car seat was the 1 /12 year old female. Three other children and the driver did not appear to be restrained at all. Deputies found two car seats in the trunk of the car after the crash.
It is believed that if proper child restraint seats and seatbelts were used everyone would be alive.
Alcohol or drugs do not appear to be a factor in the crash.
Speed is believed to be a factor in the crash but the exact speed is unknown at this time.
An autopsy is pending on both of the victims to determine the cause of death.
The investigation continues into the exact cause of the fatal crash.
